LEVELING IN GENERAL
Try to keep your leveling from kills focused on that which is necessary from quests. There will be times you can’t find good groups and you will have to level solo. I strongly suggest taking mobs that are you’re within 2 either way of your level. Lower than your level is better. Try to kill stuff that even when tired (you will be all the time) you get 100 xp for each. Avoid mobs that are so tough that they require you to rest after every 1-2. Resting every 3-4 is better and resting every 5-6 is ideal. If you try to take on mobs that give you 160 xp, you will find yourself resting and recovering your corpse far too often.
Avoid mobs that poison, use frost nova or curse. All of this slows you down. Not all creatures of the same level are equal. At level 14, for example, you will find level 14 melee only creatures that die before they get in range of you. However you will find other 14’s that are still simple melee only beasts that will give you a much harder time.
It is faster to level with a group of 5 that is very good at group leveling and extremely aggressive than it is to level on your own. I challenged some friends of mine to see if they could get a party member (who was the same class and we had both just leveled to 17 at the exact same time) to level up faster than I could solo.
The spot they went to was good for 30xp a pop in their size of group. The spot I went to was good for 120xp a pop solo. I stayed in the group so I could see their progress. My leveling went EXTREMELY well. My downtime was minimal, I didn’t die and I never had to run from a surprise popping up from behind me. They were communicating with each other in group chat franticly. I was sure I’d smoke her to 18. She beat me by 15 minutes.
This would not have been the case if the group wasn’t good. These are, however some of my favorite people to group with. I also don’t think they were in an ideal spot. They must have seen a little downtime from waiting for more spawns. If they had gone to where I suggested on Fenris Isle, they would have done even better.
It feels good to complete a very difficult quest solo. It will however take a very long time, so if you’re not into leveling as quick as possible, I suggest doing some quests solo, especially at lower levels.
There was a level 14ish quest I did that required I kill a specific person. Unlike some quests, it was very specific as to where to go and most of what to do. I was killing stuff in this field for quite some time when this big banshee chick spawns with the name I was looking for right in the middle of this small field. She was surrounded tightly by 6 beasts like the ones that are all over this farm area. There is no way I could have taken all of them at the same time and unlike most quest layouts, couldn’t pull them one at a time. I finally figured out that she spawned and despanwed every 10 minutes or so. I killed everything in sight and made sure I killed everything on the respawn quickly keeping the area clear. When she spawned, she was by herself. She was a challenge even without a bunch of guys with her.
If I had done this in a group of 4 others that needed the quest, I would have finished it in 10 minutes rather than an hour and a half. It was fun though.
LEVEL 1-14
There are about 4 quests you can get in the immediate area. Take them and do them. Some will require you to speak to someone else and other will require you to kill a few specific mobs. Knock these out fast. Level 2 comes in a few short minutes. You train new spells every even level (2, 4, 6, etc). Train everything you qualify for. This applies to all classes. At max level you will have every level of every spell.
Once you get to about level 6 you can travel to a small town near your starting area that is on your map called Brill. There’s a lot of good easy quests there and a few that will require a group.
Some of the Brill quests will have you passing the very nearby Undercity. Explore the place a little. The mage quarter is in the northeastern section of the city. Signs point the way. The mage trainer is in the back on the left up the stairs. At certain levels she will give you quests. There aren’t a lot of quests in the Undercity (UC). Go back upstairs and find the bat handler. Speak with him so you can mark the spot as a discovered flight path and get back to questing.
At this point you are about a level 8-10. I suggest finishing up all of your Brill and UC quests before moving on.
Here are some combinations you will be using at specific levels:
Level 2-3: Use fireball from max distance then hit them with your staff when they get close.
Level 4-5: Frost bolt from max distance once, then use fireball multiple times as they will run in slowly.
Level 6-9: Frost bolt, fireball, fireball and fire blast once when they finally get in close.
Levels 10+: Frost bolt, fireball, fireball, fire blast, frost nova, run back 30 yards and repeat as necessary
LEVEL 14-20
Next you want to travel to Silverpine Forrest. Continue south in Silverpine until you get to an area called The Sepulcher. You will be spending a lot of time in this small area. There are a LOT of great quests, 80% of which you should be doing in groups of three or more. Mark the location with the bat handler so you don’t have to do that long walk back and forth from UC. You now have the ability to ride the bat. Ok, go ahead, take a ride and come back. I’ll wait…..
At this point you are comfortable with judging distances and using different combinations on different types of mobs. Everything is level 10-18 except for some of the guys in the area to the far south part of the map. You should also have at least a dozen friends in your friends list that like grouping with you enough to want to drop what they’re doing to join your group.
One problem you’re having is what to put in your toolbar. So many spells so few slots. I suggest binding the number keys on your numpad to toggle toolbars. I have toolbar one on the '1' on the numpad and toolbar 2 on '2' on the numpad. Toolbar 1 has all of my absolutely necessary offensive spells in the order I tend to cast them. The attack command for my staff isn’t even in there anymore. I find the damage of the staff to be near worthless, especially at higher levels. Toolbar 2 has all of my buffs (arcane intellect, ice armor, etc), my food and drink summoning spells, invisibility and my teleport spells.
You get a lot more spells after 10, but you will find most of them to be more useful in groups more so than soloing until level 26. A lot of the new spells you get in this range are higher levels of fireball, fire blast, ice bolt, etc. You also get a few protection spells. You’ve always been using frost shield and arcane intellect constantly. Most of the other stuff you get is decent for certain situations, but not something I use a lot.
There aren’t any new combinations of spells you will be using at 14-20 (even level 25) over what you were doing at 10. You’re just doing a lot more damage.
Also note that your class skills are increasing in level. There’s nothing to train, your offensive spells simply will do more damage at higher levels.
Just keep questing. Get through all of the Silverpine quests as quickly as possible. It won’t be fast, in fact it will take a long time if you’re not grouping. Avoid quests in Shadowfang Keep until you get to level 20+ and have a lot of high level friends.
Shadowfang Keep will be your first real instanced dungeon. It is amazingly hard. You want a balanced group (catsers, healers, tanks) and everyone should be over level 20 unless they are all truly exceptional players when it comes to group play.
Once you finish Shadowfang Keep (SF), you can move on to the next area. I strongly suggest going to the Crossroads (XR) in the orc area. At level 20 go to UC and get trained in portals. The portal trainer is behind the big skull in the Mage Quarter. You can now teleport back to UC any time you want. Next, go to the front of the exterior of UC. There’s a zeppelin operator there. Have him take you to Orgrimmar (OG).
I apologize in advance for taking you here. OG is the most confusing city I have been to. Very cool looking but even with a detailed map it gets confusing. Two things to note: 1) The zeppelin guy and the other travel guy that takes you to local places are in this same tower and 2) The portal trainer and mage trainer are nearby. I suggest avoid getting too accustomed to this place until you really get into trade skills. Even then, I’d go back to UC. At the very least, it’s a heck of a lot less walking.
Walk out of OG and continue south until you get to XR. Yay, more quests. You’ve actually passed up on a few of them because you’re too high a level. Don’t worry, there’s plenty more. Most of these quests are extremely difficult and hard to find the locations for. The first few will be extremely easy making the trip worthwhile.
I wouldn’t spend too much time in XR unless you have a friend that knows the area well and will quest with you and a group. There’s an instanced dungeon near XR that is a nice challenge, but easier than Shadowfang Keep. I’d hold off on the razormane quests and do the easy ones and the wailing caverns (WC) instanced dungeon and fly back to the Sepulcher continuing south then east into the next areas or work your way down to Thunder Bluff.
At level 26 you get A LOT of great new spells. This is a huge jump for the mage. Solo hunting and questing just got a lot easier.
GROUP HUNTING/QUESTING
Hunting in a group is much more challenging in solo play but is far more rewarding in every way. Remember I said that. The downside of a mage is that it isn’t one of those 'must have' classes in a group in the minds of most people.
Where we are invaluable is the sleep spell. Use it often. I say again, use it often. You can only put one target to sleep at a time. If anyone in the group attacks the sleeping target it wakes up. Even with smart party members this happens a lot. Good warriors will be doing a lot of crowd control, so this happens on accident. To avoid this, be the person who pulls what we hope are single enemies at once. Do it by sleeping the target near the single you wish to pull. Doing so will cause the nearby target (or targets) to aggro you. Run back behind the tanks and if they don’t pull this aggro off of you, use frost nova and start blasting.
Make a lot of food and drink before adventuring for the other members of your group. This is a good way to serve the group and it will make them want to rest a little more often which you need more than anyone to regenerate mana often.
A mage is also good for removing curses. I actually have this on toolbar 1. I learned this with Agrual’s curse in SF.
Don’t use frost nova for damage. Use it for crowd control. Use it on the three things that are chasing your priest.
Also be VERY careful with AOE spells. These are absolutely amazing spells for nuking the crap out of small groups but it will make them tend to chase you. 9 guys chasing a mage is instant death. I use it when I’ve got two really smart warriors up front that are constantly in defensive mode and using taunt. I’ll warn you right now, most warriors below level 30 haven’t mastered this move. It’s not difficult, but I promise you will find out what I’m talking about. Don’t burn any bridges by chastising them for it. Just ask in advance if they are good at it. 'Hey BoNeCrUsHer, how are you at using taunt?' If they say they’re good at it tell them, 'Cool, sorry to ask, but you’d be surprised how few warriors have your grasp on their skills like you do'. If they say they don’t have taunt or don’t know how to use it (they get it at level 10 in defensive stances), then just keep your moth shut and avoid using any AOE spells including frost nova in which you should only use to save yourself and other non-tanks.
One of your best damaging attacks through level 26 is arcane missles. I don’t use it too much in solo play but with a tank in front of me I cast it over and over. It’s a HUGE mana drain though so be good at managing your drink intake on downtime.
It’s not a crime to stop fighting while others are to sit down, take a drink and restore your mana. Just don’t do it when there’s 7 enemies on 4 of them. As much as they don’t want to think so, they need your damage, especially in these situations. I’ll commonly sit down when 4 things jump on us, we take 2 of them out and no one seems to be in trouble. Just be sharp about getting back on your feet to help. Some people run unnecessarily around in groups for some reason and they tend to draw aggro from nearby mobs.
I suggest putting a lot of your energy into casting amplify magic or dampen magic on party members. Just please don’t mix the two up. Amplify magic makes you take more damage from spells but double the effects of healing. Use this on a tank that’s going toe to toe with an enemy spellcaster and you will send him to his grave. These spells only last 3 minutes so they’re a lot of micromanagement to use consistently. If you do, you will make the group FAR more effective on hunts.
LEVEL 26-45
At this point you really don’t need a lot of strategy advice. You know the world fairly well and are in great command of your skills. At this point you probably have a lot of people you can group with to quickly take down enemies slightly above your level for fast xp. There are a lot of creatures at this level that have an insane bag of tricks and there are those that are just big and strong with a lot of hp that are pretty easy to beat as a mage.
Ideally you want to find a spot when you’re soloing that is very close to a graveyard and crowded with mobs that can be taken aggressively.
10 GOLD EVERY HOUR:
Gnome is located west of IF and is reccomended lvl 30+ for it. I reccomend lvl 35+ because the boss you will be killing is Viscous Fallout, a lvl 30 elite boss. He dropps the hydrocane staff that sells for around 90s, a dagger that sells for about 65s, and some other stuff. When you first get off the elevator (go down 1 lvl) take a right at the turn, then take a left. After a little walk, youll see an instance. Enter it and when you reach the big hole, fall down it. YOU WILL LOSE ABOUT 950-1050 HP! from the fall. find a nice corner, i like the NE one because only 2 mobs that can attack you in range, heal, then take the boss. loot, then stealth out! takes less than 5min a trip! Another good thing is in the 'clean room' you can sell the loot from the boss.
3 GOLD EVERY 5 MINUTES:
Farm the boss Arcanist Doan in Scarlet Monastery, he drops Hypnotic Blade, which sells for 1g 27s, and Illusionary Rod, which sells 1g 59s I think. He also drops Robe of Doan, 40s, and Mantle of Doan, 30s.
You should be about level 40, which is when I started farming, that's what I did when I wanted my mount.
Arcanist Doan is level 37 and is in the Scarlet Monastery, located in the far right SM instace, the boss you gotta kill to get the Scarlet Key. Just Stealth directly to him, avoiding all the other mobs.
Strategy to kill him: He's immune to cheap shot, so I suggest ambushing/garroting him. He spams Arcane Explosion a lot, which hits you for 200 damage, so you better have a lot of hp for him. When his hit points reaches 50%, he'll put up a blue barrier and charges up Detonation, that is when you better get the heck out to the other side of the room before it hits you for a good 800 damage. How to avoid this is to engage the fight while when he walks to a corner of the room, so when he starts casting Detonation, you have around 5 seconds to bolt to the other side and dodge it. Or you could just simply resist it. An important part during this portion is to use first aid while he's busy casting Detonation, and when he's finished, you should just run around a little for your first aid to finish up before confronting him again. Now just hack at him, use a potion if needed, until he dies. =) He'll drop 2 items: a Hypnotic Blade/Illusionary Rod AND Mantle of Doan/Robe of Doan. Which is nearly 2g per round. It takes about 5 minutes for this whole sequence.
Now. How to get him to respawn all the time? Just have a pal to group up with, he can be doing anything he wants on the other continent if he wants. After you kill Doan and come out of the instance, have him make you party leader, then he leaves the group, then he invites you again. There the instance is reset, with a new Arcanist Doan for you to kill
ULTIME PRIEST GUIDE:
Feeling all religious? Great, cause here is your new job fresh from the job assignment center, Priest!
First off, select your race, this is crucial because each race gets their own special spells later on. The racial spells are as follows:
1. Hex of Weakness at level ten and is only open to the Trolls. This is a basic damage reduction spell, cast it on the target, its damage drops a small amount for a short time. 2. Touch of Weakness at level ten and only open to the Undead. When cast the next attack of the priest will cause extra shadow damage and reduce the damage of the monster by a small amount for a short time. 3. Starshards at level ten and is only open to Night Elf. This is a short Damage Over Time (DOT) spell causing great damage over a few seconds. 4. Desperate Prayer at level ten and only the Dwarf or Human may have. This instantly heals the character for a set amount of life, very nice in times of need. 5. Feedback at level twenty and is only open to the Humans. What this does is enchant your weapon so that it zaps mana out of your target and for every point of mana taken this way the target suffers that amount of damage. 6. Shadowguard at level twenty and is a Troll only spell. Thorns! Ok, so it’s not thorns from Diablo II, but close. What this does is returns a set amount of shadow damage whenever the target is hit but it is limited to ever few seconds and only three times. 7. Elune's Grace at level twenty and is a Night Elf only spell. This nifty spell when cast reduces damage taken from ranged enemies. 8. Devouring Plague at level twenty and is an Undead only spell. An awesome spell, this is a DOT that heals you. After casting it upon the target will suffer damage and you will in turn be healed for the amount it takes. 9. Fear Ward at level twenty and is Dwarf only spell. This is pretty basic, slap it on and the priest cannot be feared for a short time.
Also the higher intellect you have the more mana and more often you crit with magic spells not to mention the more you can heal. Spirit is also nice because it increases your regeneration rate of health and mana.
You can be Human, Night Elf, Dwarf, Undead or Troll but know this, you pick one and the rest of the characters on that server have to be of the same side. After you have gone through the creation of your character you will view a short movie for your race and be loaded at the training grounds, lets get started learning the game.
It’s time to learn how to navigate the game. Arrow keys move you as does clicking down both mouse buttons and the wheel will zoom you from your character. Auto run is Numlock, and space bar is your jump button, one of my favorites. To your top left is your picture with your life and mana bars extending outward from it.
On your far upper right you will see a map, this is very useful for navigating the world. As you travel grey arrows will appear on the map, those point to near by cities, left-click on the arrows to see the city names. An orange arrow points to your corpse when you die and a light yellow arrow points to your team mates should you be teamed but not close to each other. When you team mates are close they will be show as small dots with a yellow ring around them.
On the bottom left you will see three icons, the first is attack, the next is Smite and the third is Lesser Heal. The icon corresponds to the numbers 1-10 and – and +. Pressing one will draw your staff and pressing two will cause you to cast Smite when you have a target.
Next on your right you will see another set of icons, these consist of game settings, quest log and character information, take a peek around. Done poking around? Cool, to your further right you will see an icon on the far bottom right, which is your backpack, right click to open it. In here you will see some heal items and a stone called a hearthstone.
Now the hearthstone is super nifty, just talk to your local Inn keeper and tell him you want to rest. Doing this makes it so that when you right-click the stone you are teleported straight to the last Inn you rested at. This is really nice when you want to return from a quest quickly or just want to skip on the long run from the middle of no where. You can only use it once per hour though so use wisely. There are also four other slots next to the backpack for further bags that you can find or buy later on.
Look around at the people near you, you should see a guy around you with an exclamation point above his head, talk to him, he has a quest for you.
Anyone you see with exclamation points above their heads has quests for you. After you complete the quest an orange question mark will appear over the NPC’s head showing that they are ready to give you a reward. Now, get your first quest and head out to start killing.
After you complete a quest or two you should be two or three and get a quest to see your trainer, let’s go seem him. If you don’t have the quest look around the starting area for someone offering a quest, it should be there. After you have reached your trainer take a look at your skills, pretty straight forward. Here is some of what you should see.
• Smite- You’ve been using this, you should know, just bashes your target beyond recognition. • Power Word: Fortitude- This increase the targets stamina for a short time, very nice for that extra bit of life. • Shadow Word: Pain- A nice DOT- you will want this. • Lesser Heal- It heals target. • Power Word: Shield- Nice spell, it basically absorbs a set amount of damage, in a sense increasing the priest life. It is also nifty because spell casting cannot be interrupted while this spell is active. It only lasts a short time so make your moves quickly. • Renew- This is what we call a HOT or Heal Over Time. Cast it on your target, they get healed for so much over a set amount of time. Very useful is cast just before battle. • Mind Blast- Causes a nice amount of damage with high minimum and maximum. Down side is it makes the monster really really pissed off at you. • Inner Fire- Nice skill that increases the priest’s damage and armor for short time. • Psychic Scream- Nice spell to use when you need two enemies off your back, cast it and two nearby enemies will flee. Very nice for when you need to run. • Mind Flay- This is an awesome skill. This is a DOT but also is slows your target by 50%, very nice to use when you want to pound a target from a distance and keep it there.
Well, there we have your skills, the descriptions in game are pretty straight forward. When you reach level ten you will open up talents which you will want to use. Now be careful, if you are still in open beta then you can reset them, it has been said that after launch you can’t so remember that when launch hits. Your talent points will be best spent on Holy and Discipline since you will be healing most of the time.
Well, there isn’t much more for me to say aside from remind you to stay on top of your quests and remember that intellect and spirit items are good for the mana increase, crit increase, and regain rate. When you get about 10 or so Westfall becomes the best place for alliance, can really say for horde as I haven’t played there yet. Remember, you are the pillar of your team, you keep it together with your heals, be strong and keep onto of your heals.
WARLOCK GUIDE:
This guide is a basic guide to the warlock. It should get you started and give you a general idea of how to operate the game and play the class.
Now, as far as race goes there isn't any real difference besides the amount of mana and life you start out with so chose any race you wish. I think undead look awesome but they are on the low end of the mana chain only starting out with One-hundred and ten. If you want to be a short Gnome then you are going to start with a whopping two-hundred! Either way you go they are pretty close to the same.
Now, go, create, dress up, and for gods sake get a nice hair cut! Done creating your character? Watched the story movie thing? Super, let’s get you on the road to becoming that warlock of doom everyone is always talking about. First off get familiar with moving around in the world, arrow keys make you move or you can click down both mouse buttons and hold. You can look all about by holding the right mouse button down and rolling your mouse around, you get the picture. If you are looking for an auto run, the push numlock, this will be handy for when you want to eat and run away from a monster at the same time.
Next look around for some guy with an exclamation point above his head, you are going to see a lot of those. These fellows can give you quests, which we want lots of, so talk to everyone of these you see, they are all about. Some of the missions will appear later and some of the exclamation points will be a stone gray color, meaning they will have a mission for you soon, like next level or so. You will find missions everywhere, in homes, Inn's, caves, Mountain passes, so keep your eyes pealed.
Missions are a very fast way to level in World of Warcraft, probably better at lower levels then higher, but I haven't reached the top yet. So after gathering your missions take a look at the bottom of your screen. Here you will see all sorts of buttons and what not, don't be afraid, they are only here to help. First look to the far bottom left of your screen. Here you will see a weapon icon, a dagger for you but the same goes for every class, a hammer for Paladins, sword for Warrior and so on.
This is pretty basic, just press 1 on your number row and you perform the skill, same goes for the rest of the icons on the left all the way up to 0. This is pretty basic and standard for most MMORPG's. Now on the right of the hot keys, those being the 1-10 buttons on the bottom of the left had screen, you will see another row of buttons, these are in game help and other things like quest log and character info. Try each one out and remember what they do. The character info, Quest key and Map button will probably be your most used buttons so make note of them. To the right of these lay some empty slots and a backpack icon. Right click the back pack to open it up and check out what you have, some healing gear, maybe some ammo not a whole lot at the moment, but that's alright, you'll get stuff fast. The one key thing in your pack though is the Hearthstone, this, when used, will return you to whatever Inn you last rested at, very nice for saving yourself a long run after finishing a Quest.
Now, as you go along you will get little bags to stick in the empty slots next to your backpack, these are great finds and not hard to get made if you know what kind of creatures to kill. But enough about the games little things, you want to bash some heads in, break some bones, sear some flesh right? Great, because I want you to, head out of your little starting area and look to the left or right for some creatures to kill.
The targeting system is basic, just press tab while close to a monster and you will select it, unfortunately its range is super limited and it might just be easier to left click on the said target. So, select something, look to the bottom left, make sure your icons number are white, as that means you are within range to attack and then start casting! Now you are going to see a bar appear as you cast, when this bar fills you will cast the spell, if you move it will cancel, if you get hit it will lose some of its percentage complete. As soon as the spell is cast you can cast it again, roll out those shadow bolts and drop your first creature!
That was easy wasn't it? Now, check out your life and mana bar on the top left, you will see you lost some life, most likely and a lot of mana. Don't worry about it, press 3 and you will cast demon skin which will increase your regain rate and your armor so you take less damage. You will notice that health and mana return quickly, this is rather nice but may change as it makes leveling a bit easy as you never seem to need to sit and heal, at least not if you are a warlock.
Now, as far as loot goes you will see the monster you have killed is glowing, no, that is not its soul going to heaven and neither is it made of gold but it does mean you can loot it. Simply put your mouse of the corpse and right click and loot up. I advise at lower levels that you only grab things that stack which is anything other then armor it seems. Reason for this is you can carry lots of them and the low armor doesn't sell for as much as a stack of them, but do pick up some armor and try to equip it, for a warlock you can only wear cloth pretty much, and a flimsy chain mail cloak, just check them out as you go.
Now kill your way to happiness, as you do the quests you will move farther and farther out from your home town, make sure to learn your skills and doing your pet quest, which can be done a level 1 if you are human warlock, level 4 or so for gnome. As you reach a new town talk to the Inn keeper and tell him you want to rest so that you can return there using your stone any time you want.
Now, for skills, here is what we have and what you should get as you go on.
• Shadow Bolt- This is your basic Direct Damage spell. You already have this at level one when you start the game and will want to continue to level it up as you go. • Immolate- This is A Damage Over Time or DOT as they are called. This is a very nice spell to use to open you battle up with since it does its damage over time.-level this up as you go. • Corruption- This is another nice DOT and once you get it you should use this before Immolate as it takes longer to cast. This would be another nice one to level up. • Life Tap- This spell converts some of your life into mana, as it is you may not be concerned really with mana at the moment, but as you go along keep this spell in mind, there are times where I wish I had more, but more life is also nice. • Curse of Weakness- This at first level Isn't a great spell, it reduces the damage of the monster for 2 minutes by 3, that's not amazing or anything because it's not really a lot of damage to be concerned about and you will have the monster dead in ten seconds or less anyway. However, at higher levels and for longer battles this spell will be great to help you, or your pet live that extra few seconds. • Fear- Causes the enemy to run away for a short time. Very nice spell for taking on groups of two or three, but it can also get you into trouble because the monster you feared can bring back friends. Use wisely. • Curse of Agony- Another nice DOT and is best used after the first two since you need the extra space between you and the monster to get the other spells off unhindered. You can only have one curse active on a monster at a time though, so curse of weakness needs to take a back seat sometimes. • Drain soul- This spell you can get at level ten and is a good spell to a point. It is a DOT, but a DOT that keeps you casting until the end of its duration, this spell is best used only if you need the Soul Shard the monster will yield at death as an effect of this spell. Soul Shards are used to summon your pets after the Imp pet and can be used to create healthstones which heal you for 100 instantly. Very nice to have! • Create Healthstone- This spell will change one Soul shard into a healthstone, sounds awesome, and it is, to an extent. The down side is you can only have one healthstone at a time because they are unique. So, it’s a nice spell to have so you can have that extra 100 point heal when you need it, so get it, they may change the amount you can have after launch. • Health Funnel- This spell would be best used in a group. It allows you to heal your pet but in return you are losing life yourself, so you don't want to use it on pets that can't hold aggro or tank. It's still a nice spell to have around.
As you get higher you will attain new DOTs and life transfer spells, but everything else is basic, you should be able to get an understanding of the spell by reading its description and decide if you want it or not. When you hit level ten you will get talents, these will boost your current skill powers even more, look for the talents box just after the character info Icon, it's that new red one.
And one last thing, the best way as a warlock to solo is to send you pet in first, which you can make attack by selecting a creature and pressing Ctrl+1, and then, while it starts to attack open with your DOT's and pull aggro from your pet with your shadow bolt spell. Make sure to buy the upgrades for your pets. One more thing about quests they are always where they say they are, so far, the directions given are great, just ask someone if you aren't sure.
